About University of Florida

The University of Florida, commonly known as Florida or simply UF, is an American public land-grant, sea-grant, research, space-grant university, located in Gainesville, which is a city in Alachua County, in the US state of Florida. According to the 2008 Census Bureau, Gainesville’s population is estimated at a number of nearly 260 000 inhabitants, and according to National Geographic Adventure, the city is one of the "best places to live and play".

UF traces its roots back in 1853, when the East Florida Seminary, which is one of UF’s 4 predecessor institutions, was founded in Ocala, FL. The Florida Architectural College was the second major precursor to the university, which was later changed to "University of Florida", name which only stuck for 2 years. On July 6, 1905, Gainesville was selected as UF’s campus, by the Board of Control, and in 1909, the name by which the university is known today, was officially settled, being simplified from "University of the State of Florida" to "University of Florida".

Today, UF is recognized as the 2nd largest university in the state, by student population, also being named a "Public Ivy", being currently ranked 47th among all national universities, public and private, in a 2010 edition of U.S. News & World Report, as well. UF is also an elected member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), which is an organization that consists of 62 American and Canadian universities, being one of the 3 "research flagship universities" within the State University System of Florida, as designated by the Florida Legislature.

UF is also known for the fact that its researchers developed the sport drink known as Gatorade, being known as the most academically comprehensive university in the state of Florida, as well, offering its students through 17 academic colleges, 87 schools and departments and more than 150 research centers and institutes, over 120 master’s degree programs and 76 doctoral degree programs.

The athletic teams from UF are known as the "Florida Gators", who compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and the Southeastern Conference (SEC), in various sports, being best known for their achievements in football and men’s basketball. Over the past years, the Gators have won 24 team national championships, 19 of which are NCAA championships, winning multiple national championships in 2 of the most popular NCAA sports: football – in 1996, 2006 and 2008 – and men’s basketball – in 2006 and 2007.
